Teacher Education Reciprocal Learning Program
This Teacher Education Reciprocal Learning Program is developed between the University of Windsor (UW) and Southwest University (SWU) China, with the partnership with the Greater Essex County District School Board, funded by the SSHRC Partnership Program, UW Strategic Priority Fund and SWU teacher education fund. The goals of this program are to provide an exceptional experience with international engagement, to broaden teacher candidates’ horizons for a society of increasing diversity, to foster international collaboration among faculty members who are interested in cross-cultural studies, multicultural education, and to enhance the international reputation of UW.
PROGRAM INTRODUCTION
The program involves a yearly exchange of pre-service students between the two universities, is now entering the fourth year. The 5-year agreement has been extended to 2020 with the additional research support funded by SSHRC of Canada. In each fall semester, teacher candidates from SWU come to the University of Windsor's Faculty of Education to take part in courses, observe in local schools, participate in cultural events and field trips, and hence learn about teacher education and school education in Canada. Reciprocally, every spring UW teacher candidates visit SWU to attend a series of lectures and workshops on Chinese educational philosophy, education system, school system and culture, observe in local Chinese schools, and participate in cultural activities and fieldtrips.
Feedback from participating University of Windsor teacher candidates:
“This was by far the best experience of my life. I had an amazing time learning about the Chinese culture and educational system. I have gained so much knowledge about both subjects and I will be able to incorporate much of this information into my daily life and classroom!”
“I cannot express how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to participate in this program. I never imagined that I would ever travel to China and I am overwhelmed with how amazing this trip was for me. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher but entering the classrooms in China created a passion within me and I fully understand that teaching is a part of who I am. This is an experience that I will never forget and I am sad that I could not have stayed longer to experience more in China.”
